2011-2012 PTO Meeting Schedule

PTO Meetings are held on the first or second Tuesday of each month at 7pm in the Library. Check the Baker School Calendar for more details. 

One-Time Events (yearly PTO calendar overview)

BooHoo Yahoo Welcome Coffee for New Parents (September)
Welcome incoming parents at a Coffee with the Principal on the first days of school for PreK and K. Mingle and answer questions informally with new parents.  (Note: we will be combining this event with a Welcome Coffee for ALL GRADE new families in September 2011)

Back to School Breakfast (September)
It's the entire Baker School "welcome back" celebration - very informal with families and staff - where families bring breakfast goods to share. On a mid-September morning at 7:30 at the Upper Playground,  volunteers are needed for 1 hour or less to set up and/or clean up. See photos on the Baker School webpage.

Convocation (September)
It's a celebration of the school, for students only, led by the class of new 8th graders in mid-September. Volunteers are needed for 1 hour to distribute food and cider to classrooms. 

School Picture Day (October)
Cover 1-2 hour shifts assisting photographers in recording photos. A great way to help the school raise significant funds (the PTO receives a proceed of the photo revenues) and work with other parent volunteers.  

2011 Annual FUNd Kickoff Event for Families
A FUN new event marking the kickoff of our monthlong Annual Fund drive is in the works for October 2011.

2010 Fall Party for Parents at the Vine Ripe Grill  (October)
A casual evening at a local parent-managed establishment to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Despite a rainy evening, our first event drew many parents and we will do it again in the Spring!

K-3 Game Night (winter)
New in Fall 2009, the K-3 Social provides an enjoyable and age appropriate party for our younger students. Different grades have taken on leading this activity as a grade-level fundraiser.

Book Fair  (December)
Cover 1-2 hour shifts selling books as students visit the Fair before, during and after school (3 day event typically in late November or early December)

Sock Hop (Spring)
This annual school dance raises money to offset the costs of the 8th Grade Trip. Parents are needed to coordinate as well as help with set up, clean up, refreshments, etc.

Understanding Disabilities Program (UDP) (winter)
(4th grade Townwide Curriculum)
The program aims to raise awareness of children and adults to the many issues facing people with disabilities as they try to live in a world designed by and for able-bodies people. The program teaches about four challenging conditions: visual impairments, hearing loss, physical impairments and intellectual impairments. Volunteers are needed help with all units in the classroom under the supervision of a trained session leader. Parents from any grade may volunteer though the lessons are taught to 4th graders. 

NEW! Wine tasting for parents at The Urban Grape (March 2011)
A new for 2011 event where parents can sample wines from around the word at a new local establishment, The Urban Grape, located in the Star Market Plaza on Route 9. Click here to view photos from the event.

Soccer Swap (March)
This event provides the opportunity to donate used soccer cleats, exchange used cleats for new (used) cleats, or buy donated cleats at very affordable prices in time for the spring soccer season. This involves about 1.5 hours total time which can be divided among multiple volunteers.

Spring Fundraiser (April)
For 2012 our fair will be turned into a "green" fundrasier - stay tuned! To see photos of our 2011 Spring Fair Communityfest, click here

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Luncheon (May)
PTO volunteers and parents host a homemade buffet luncheon for our hardworking Baker faculty and staff one day each spring.  Click here to see photos from the 2011 event.

Korean PTO Bazaar (May)
The Korean Parents Organization organizes a fundraiser each spring selling Korean delicacies and goods. Click here to see photos.  

Graduation (June)
The 7th grade families host the 8th grade families for the graduation festivities.

On-Going Activities

PTO Meetings and Leadership
The mission of the Baker School PTO is to promote the education and enrichment of students in the school and community by: promoting communication between the home and school; fostering support for any school related activities; and identifying and responding to any issues that may affect the well-being of the children and families within the school and community. All parents or legal guardians of children attending Baker School, and Principal and all members of the faculty and administrative staff, are members of the PTO and entitled to full voting privileges. The Officers of the PTO consist of the (Co-) President(s), (and/or) a Vice President, the Treasurer, and the Secretary. Committee members may be appointed by the President(s) at any time.  Click here to

Green Team
As part of a town-wide initiative, develop and implement ideas to help Baker student understand their impact on the environment and to reduce our carbon footprint! In 2009-2010 Baker held a monthly "ThinkEARTHursday" that included a walk-to-school campaign. Visit the GREEN TEAM PAGE for more information.

School Site Council
A townwide representative, school-based committee composed of the Principal, parents, teachers and community members. 

Arts Council
Using resources and contacts provided by the PTO, coordinate arts performers to visit Baker School. This is done in conjunction with the other Brookline K-8 Schools.

Library Volunteers
Our Librarian, Paula Ewenstein, needs parents to make a short-time long-term commitment to learn how to process returned books and assist in the Library. Please contact her directly with any questions and to sign up. Email paula_ewenstein@brookline.k12.ma.us
