Art Council
Support for special arts, literacy and performance activities at Baker comes from the PTO Annual Fund. With your contributions, you are helping our students gain exposure to new ideas and spark their creativity.
Since 2014, thanks to your Annual Fund donations and the work of Arts Council, Baker students have:
Visited with beloved award-winning author Grace Lin. Ms. Lin is the author and illustrator of picture books, early readers and middle grade novels. (Grades 1-5, 2015)
Danced with Chiao Bin, the Chinese Ribbon Dancer, who supported the curriculum on Chinese New Year with creative dance and interactive lessons (Grade 1, 2014, 2015, 2016)
Played music with the Eine Kleine Konsort musicians, who performed with, and for, all students to cap off their year of Recorder lessons with music teacher Maureen Myers (Grade 3, 2014, 2015, 2016)
Experimented with the educators of Mad Science, who came to classrooms to demonstrate hands-on activities from their “CHEM-MYSTERY” program to complement the science curriculum (Grade 4, 2014)
Engaged in a team building effort to set up a life size tipi with Native American Educator Dan Cripps, who taught about Native American lifestyles according to the different geographic regions. Mr. Cripps provided an engaging and interactive learning experience. (Grade 4, 2015, 2016).
Laughed with performers from Improv Boston, who provided a funny and thought-provoking interactive program called "The 4 C's" (Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Critical Thinking) that helped kids understand that life is a balancing act and thinking on one’s feet is an important skill to develop (Middle School, 2014)
Acted with the educators from Knighthorse Shakespeare Company to develop a richer understanding of A Midsummer’s Night Dream and Romeo and Juliet, from the 6th, 7th and 8th grade curriculums (Spring 2015, 2016).
Other grades also participate in different enrichments, such as author visits and animal encounters, which are funded through the grade-level grant program of the PTO which is also supported by Annual Fund donations. In addition, the PTO also provides funding for Baker traditions such as Carnival of the Animals, BUGZ, the Middle School Musical, and the K-8 Art Show.
In April, we held our fourth annual Art Show for students in K-8. It was a wonderful night that featured displays of art by every student in our school – over 800 masterpieces in clay, metal, printmaking, perspective drawing, nature drawing, portraiture and more. We were treated to beautiful music by Beyond the Strings, a violin and cello ensemble led by a Baker parent, Seo Hee Koo.
Baker Arts Council volunteers meet on several times a year with counterparts from the other Brookline schools to ensure that Baker students are exposed to similar programming as other students in town. We share ideas, preview new performances in the region, and brainstorm ideas to keep arts alive in our school system.
Thank you for keeping arts alive at Baker!
