Ginny Friedman, Treasurer, informed the group that the PTO had raised approximately $18,000 to date and needed to net $43,000 by year end in order to meet budget.
3) Arts Council Update
Elizabeth Schlosberg presented details on grade-level arts events requested and approved to date: 1st Grade Chinese Ribbon Dancers; 3rd Grade recorder workshop; 4th Grade TBD. Possible Shakespeare group for 7th and 8th, also possibly 6th. Goal is to provide something for every grade.
K-8 Art Show is going to happen. There may be an auxiliary event involving parent art / raffle / etc. Plans are in early discussion phase.
4) Upcoming Events were previewed:
Community Chat January 13th, K-3 Game Night Jan. 23rd, UDP ongoing (volunteer rate not great), Ice Skating Feb. 7th, future PTO meetings 2/24 and 5/12.
5) Traffic Concerns
A couple community members expressed concerns about traffic on Beverly Road, in parking lot where children cross to Hancock Village via tennis courts, and within Hancock Village. PTO has passed on concerns to Administration. It was reiterated that students who are crossing the parking lot should seek an alternate route where a crosswalk exists, whether or not accompanied by an adult. Also any traffic issue within Hancock Village should be reported to Chestnut Hill Realty; Brookline Schools have no oversight there.
6) Presentation by Kathleen Hubbard, Math Specialist
Ms. Hubbard discussed recent changes in math curriculum to align with Common Core. Shift in content and practice is toward more depth in fewer areas, more focus on understanding concepts to ensure that math makes sense to students.
The next PTO meeting will be Tuesday, February 24th at 7:00pm.
Minutes respectfully submitted by Carolyn Thall, PTO secretary.
Approved unanimously on Feb 24th, 2014 7:10 pm
