Baker PTO Meeting Minutes
11/27/12
Board members present: Kristin Jones, Kerrianne Ciccone, Sarah Jeung, Carolyn Thall
1. New Food Service Director
Brookline Schools’ food services Director, Chef Alden Cadwell, introduced himself. He previously worked for the Concord Public Schools as well as for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution program in West Virginia. He described the new federal regulations for school lunches and his goals for our program. More calories on each plate now have to come from vegetables and fruits, and it is challenging to find dishes students will eat – just like in families’ homes. His budget is $1.80 per plate; this is a good budget compared to other districts he has seen so he is prioritizing high quality food. For example he does not trust and will not use the federally provided beef. He is getting some ingredients from Allendale Farm. He wants to serve a “rainbow” of foods weekly.
2. Upcoming Events
a) Dr. Brown’s first “Principal Hour” of the year will take place Friday, December 7th. She will discuss the school’s/district’s math and literacy assessments.
b) Book Fair is December 4-6. It will raise money for the PTO and send books to classrooms.
c) All-school Ice Skating Party is February 2nd at Larz Anderson rink. No volunteers are needed! Entry is free, skate rental is available for a fee. Snacks will be available for purchase.
d) Sarah Jeung is developing ideas for a “Cultural Night” (the event is not officially named yet). Ideas include food, music, dancing. It will be a fundraiser. We will start exploring logistics of space (using outside vs. not, etc.). People signed up to be involved; meetings will continue.
3. PTO Budget
Kristin handed out copies of the proposed 2012-2013 budget as well as the expense report to date. Some teachers/grades have availed of the $1000 “grade-level grants.” More education for teachers/staff is probably needed to ensure everyone understands what the $1000 can be used for and how to access the funds. We also want to help teachers/staff get things they want from the district when appropriate, so they can use PTO funds for other items.
