Wednesday, November 12, 2014
Meeting Notes
8:30-8:40 Discussion about school calendar for 2015-2016 and the start of school Teacher's Union said "No" to Aug. 31 start date, options are to start on Sept. 3, 4, or wait until Sept. 8th. Most support for start on Sept. 3rd, before Labor Day.
8:45 Set of options for space needs
Goal: To show parents that this is not only about "their school" -- such thinking will not help solve the problem
Discussion about problems around quick solution of modulars, a timing and funding issue as no funds are available right now
Tim Sullivan (Baker School) raises questions about funding
Steve Watson (Driscoll School) brings up question about a 9th school
Peter Rowe responds that 9th school idea is being studied by outside advisors on land, space, and funding feasibility
The administration believes that there will be a Statement of Interest in April on the Brookline High School
Discussion on Old Lincoln School and who will go there (Baker/Pierce)?
Need for a plan behind those schools/moves
Question about the voluntary middle school idea, one issue being the predictability of numbers to move
9:30 Override Budget Scenerios presented by Dr. Lupini
Graph showing gaps in achievement , especially in students with IEP's and students of color
Two Scenerios presented.... 65% and 90%
Review of 100% scenerio and a discussion on "education"
90% Scenario
Choices include- partial supply, no grade 2 paraprofessional, less administration, less professional development, add to ECS and World
Language
65% Scenario
Choices include- no ECS, no World Language, no 4th grade instruments, less high school course offerings, larger class sizes
NO Override Scenario- how much to cut would spend on the town/school ratio of funds
A 10 million dollar override is a 6% tax increase
Town boards with influence include...Advisory Committee, Board of Selectmen and School Committee
Meeting ended with ideas and enthusiasm for bringing attention to all that is going on in the Town and Schools of Brookline right now
